The city is one of the few in the United States to boast two Revolutionary War battlefields, the Battle of Camden and the later Battle of Hobkirk Hill. It was named after the esteemed Lord Camden who was a notable supporter of colonial rights. Camden later grew to become a popular resort destination for weathering the winter, it is the site of the third oldest active Polo field in America and is known as the "Steeplechase Capital of the World."
